Being around other people and getting involved is a good way to better yourself. In college it’s hard for some people to become more open and socialize. Joining one of the many groups or organizations at Iowa State is a great way to meet new friends and possibly create new job opportunities.
When I first arrived at Iowa State University campus I was bombarded with various invites to join clubs of all kinds. With so many clubs around campus, it seemed that it was pry a good idea to start looking around and see which ones interested me.
I went to a few of the clubs kickoff events which spanned over a couple of weeks. I looked into groups like Block and Bridle, ASABE, and Cyclone Power Pullers. The best part about that week was all the free food and massive amounts of prizes. I attended club fest and looked at a couple other clubs, but I knew I could only devote my time to a select few.
The two clubs I chose to join were Cyclone Power Pullers and American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. I decided to devote most of my time to the Power Pullers. I had both an interest personally and academically in this group. There are devoted to my selected major and option. I love to work on machinery, so designing ¼ tractors for the purpose of pulling in competitions was right up my alley.
I felt I have met many new friends since joining. This certain club is also a good way to get connections with companies that could possibly end up hiring me. The first day I went to the shop to work on the machines, I was thrown right into getting greasy and trying to solve problems. This was a good way to improve leadership skills and taking on large tasks.
I feel that joining a club at Iowa State University is a great way in succeeding through college. If it’s meeting new people or working as a leader to accomplish a goal, clubs are the way to go. I think now that I’m involved in such a great organization that it will help me both with academics and with my social life. If anyone would ask me should I join a club when going to college, I would defiantly say yes.
